Follow our BACK ROADS and COUNTRY LANES to outdoor adventure. And not a single stop light. On the trip from Newport (the County Seat) to Metaline Falls … keep looking up to see the bald eagles, great blue heron, Tundra swans ( in February/March)… You could paddle your kayak or canoe on the Pend Oreille River Water Trail should driving not suit your mood. Take a tour of Gardner Cave outside of Metaline – it’s near Boundary Dam and about 200 yards from Canada. Metaline Falls was the movie location for “The Postman” (along with Boundary Dam) and it’s a quaint little town. Ione is home to the restored Tour Train run by the Lions Club. Great ride with a stop on the Box Canyon Dam . Guaranteed to get your heart rate up. Cusick skate park (Tony Hawk-designed) sits on the river’s edge where the Diamond Match Company floated white pine from our forests to make matches. Remember those red and blue Diamond Match boxes back in the day? Usk is home to the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and a herd of buffalo, a top notch wellness center (3 swimming pools! A full-size basketball court! And a complete set of work out equipment.) The Kalispel Tribe hosts a stellar Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza for the entire county – open to all at no charge. So take a break and have some fun here!

Water trails offer small boat recreationalists and paddlers the opportunity to travel a designated route along a river by providing access areas, environmental and historical points of interests, relaxing picnic stops, and overnight campsites. They educate on the environment, history, and culture of the area and promote resource stewardship. Water trails provide paddlers with relaxing outdoor recreation, fresh-air fitness, and family activities.
